The rent-to-own transaction is very unique and unlike any other transaction available to the consumer. I heard it described recently as a hybrid. Meaning, the ownership option is available to the customer and they are not obligated to keep the merchandise or to buy the property, it’s their choice.

It began in the 1970s when a savvy entrepreneur identified a need and filled it. He noticed many potential customers that had an immediate want or need for household items without the ability to either pay cash for or the ability to finance. The rent-to-own industry was born and has been evolving ever since.

I have made it my life’s work to understand the rent-to-own customer and the transaction that serves them. I have been on a mission since 1981 to master my craft. I learned that there are no secrets to becoming successful in the rent-to-own industry. It’s all about being brilliant at the basics. All it takes is to be lined up, fired up and focused up on serving your customers needs, in a superior way and your success and the success of your store will be the result. It’s as simple as that.

I have become a rent-to-own specialist. The word specialist is defined as someone that knows more and more about less and less. For the past 30 years the rent-to-own transaction has been all-consuming for me. I’ve been on a quest to be the best. Now I want to share what I have learned to help other rent-to-own professionals to improve their lives and grow their businesses.

RTO salesSales – in rent-to-own is when a customer’s wants or needs are matched with the product and services that we provide. Our job is to identify what plan we offer is best suited for the customers needs. Closing the sale in rent-to-own is defined as getting the order and scheduling delivery.

 

RTO collectionsCollections – in rent-to-own is about successfully renewing the customer’s agreement in the event they want to continue renting the merchandise. My collection training contains over 10,000 written words and can be summarized in one sentence. The only way to get them to pay you is to get them to want to pay you. This happens when our customer’s value the product and service we provide more than they value their money.

 

RTO operationsOperations – in rent-to-own is the nuts and bolts of our transaction. This is where the rubber meets the road. We are ultimately managing customers, inventory and employees.

The last industry survey by APRO indicated there are approximately 8600 stores in all 50 states and Canada that generate more than $7 billion in revenue by serving more than 6 million customers a year. I think, we are all here with the same objective which is to serve our customers, some of us just do it better than others. How are you doing?

It is based on technique and methodology. The basics of management, is to plan, organize, motivate, delegate and control. The required skills are learnable. RTO LeadershipLeadership – in rent-to-own is to help those who are doing poorly to do well and those that are doing well to do even better. It is about getting people to do, what you want them to do, because they want to do it. Leadership can be defined with one word, influence. We all influence those people we interact with on a daily basis. The question is, do we influence them positively or negatively?
